Why is it named Piestewa Peak?
Piestewa Peak is named in honor of Army Specialist Lori Piestewa from Tuba City, Arizona.
She was the first American military woman to be killed in the 2003 Iraq War. She is also believed to be the first Native American woman to be killed in combat.
The peak’s previous name, Squaw Peak, was changed in 2008 to pay tribute to Piestewa and her contributions. It serves as a lasting testament to her bravery and the enduring Native American spirit.
