9 of the Best Places to Take Photos in Rome
Table of Contents
1. The Roman Forum
The Roman Forum was the beating heart of ancient Rome. It was the political, religious, social, and administrative center of the Empire.
As you walk along the Via Sacra among the ruins of temples and palaces, you can imagine what life was once like.
The entrance at Largo della Salara Vecchia is the least crowded, whereas the entrance from the Colosseum is the most crowded.
2. The Colosseum
The Colosseum has a gruesome history of gladiator fights and animal hunts. However, it still stands as an architectural wonder.
For the best photos by the Colosseum, take the stairs across the street to Via Nicola Salvi where you’ll find this ledge.
3. Trevi Fountain
The grandeur of the Trevi fountain is astounding. This baroque fountain is the oldest water source in Rome and took over 100 years to complete.
Funding for the fountain came from the Roman lottery.
About 3,000 euros are collected daily from the fountain and donated to a local charity.
4. Outdoor Cafes
One of our favorite things about Rome is that the streets are lined with charming outdoor cafes.
This cafe is located in Piazza Navona. However, our favorite place to eat was Dar Poeta found in the Travestere neighborhood of Rome.
Order the Ricotta and Nutella Calzone, and thank me later!
5. The Spanish Steps
The Spanish Steps is the widest staircase in all of Europe with 138 uniquely shaped stairs.
It may seem a little anti-climactic as you approach the steps and realize it is just a staircase after all.
However, walk to the top of the steps and you’ll be rewarded with these sweeping views over the rooftops.
Soak in the energy of this vibrant spot as tourists and locals gather to relax and hang out.
6. Neighborhood Stoops
It is an unspoken rule that gelato must be consumed at least once a day when in Rome.
Our favorite gelato shop is Gelateria del Teatro. Try the ricotta + fig, you won’t be disappointed!
You can spot the best gelato shops by how they have the gelato displayed. If it is whipped high with decadent toppings, keep on walking. It’s just for show and whipped with fillers.
If you find a gelato shop where the gelato is stored flat in metal tins, that’s the good stuff! This charming little stoop is found just outside Gelateria del Teatro.
7. Bustling Piazzas
You’ll find many piazzas scattered throughout the city. These city squares are a gathering spot for locals and tourists alike.
You’ll find artisans selling handmade goods, musicians filling the air with music, artists working on their paintings, and fresh produce sold at weekend markets.
It is somewhat reminiscent of a bustling medieval marketplace. Our favorite piazzas are Piazza Navona and Campo di Fiori.
8. Vatican City
Be sure to set aside at least half of a day to explore Vatican City. Considered the world’s smallest country, Vatican City is home to St Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museum (where you can find Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel), and the Vatican Gardens.
9. Hidden Alleys
When visiting a major tourist destination like Rome, you are most likely going to focus your attention on the top attractions.
However, be sure to take the time to explore the cobblestone streets and hidden alleys. This is where the true treasures lie.
You’ll get an intimate glimpse of the local culture and untouched beauty that is waiting to be discovered.
