Catalonia Costa Mujeres Room Accommodations
We were so impressed with the accommodations at Catalonia Costa Mujeres. This is an all-suites hotel, meaning that every room at the resort is a suite that features a living area in addition to the bedroom.
We stayed in the Family Suite Superior with our family of 5. The room was well-equipped and comfortable with two queen beds and a separate room with a queen sofa pull-out bed.
There is also a desk area that was convenient for my husband who needed to work remotely.
You’ll also find a large open closet that is lined with shelves to hold all of the suitcases. The extra storage is helpful in keeping the floors cleared of luggage.
The bathroom is roomy and the rain shower head was so relaxing. The only downside is that there is no bathroom door.
There is a door to the shower and a door to the toilet, but there is no place to change or have privacy once you step out of the shower.
The air conditioning works great and the blackout curtains help keep the room cool and dark for those mornings that you want to sleep in!
Each suite also boasts a large furnished outdoor terrace that looks over the ocean or resort pools. Upgrades are also available for rooms with swim out pools.
Catalonia Costa Mujeres Food and Restaurants
One of the biggest draws to an all-inclusive resort is the all-you-can-eat food and drinks. But nobody wants to be stuck eating mediocre “cruise ship” food for a week.
We were happy to discover that there is a wide variety of quality food options at Catalonia Costa Mujeres.
You’ll find 6 themed restaurants including Mexican, Italian, Asian, American, and more. There are also 5 food courts, a generous buffet, beach-front snack bars, and food trucks.
Our favorite restaurant was the Teppanyaki grill called AYAMI.
It was such a fun experience to see the food prepared in front of us and the chef was very entertaining. The food was also delicious, I am still craving that fried rice!
Reservations are required and can be booked up to two days in advance. The time slots open up at midnight and they go quickly, so be sure to log onto the website right at midnight.
Check with the front desk for more information on making reservations.
Reservations are also required for the Grill Steakhouse. The dress code is not enforced at both of these restaurants, but guests are encouraged to wear something a little more dressy than shorts and flip-flops.
We also liked the gnocchi at Toscana,
the strawberry Nutella crepes and coconut milkshakes at the creperie, the sushi rolls from Tao Cat,
the banana splits at the food truck,
fruit tarts at the coffee shop,
and the avocado toast bar at the buffet.
We weren’t as impressed with the burgers at Catalonia Burgers or the Mexican cuisine dishes at Adelita, though.
They also did not offer free room service, which is often a perk at some of the other resorts.
As with any resort, you’ll find some food you love and some you don’t, but overall we thought it was delicious and the service was great.
Just be sure to bring plenty of small bills to tip your waiters and other staff at the resort.
Catalonia Costa Mujeres Amenities and Activities
I love the breezy style of this resort. It gives off a mid-century modern vibe with bright pops of color, clean lines, and tasteful decor.
The resort is small in comparison to other neighboring resorts, which gives it a more intimate feel.
In the center, you’ll find Quinta Avenida which runs the length of the resort. This main thoroughfare is inspired by Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue, in Playa del Carmen.
This plaza is lined with restaurants, bars, and food courts with outdoor patio seating.
There are also specialty shops and a mini-mart if you are looking for the essentials. However, be prepared to pay a small fortune.
A bottle of sunscreen will cost upwards of $25 USD and a small pool toy will be around $20 so it is best to pack as much as you can.
I especially love the ambiance at night when Quinta Avenida is illuminated by bright lights and live music fills the air.
Quinta Avenida is flanked on both sides by rows of hotel rooms each with a large pool filling the center.
The swimming pools each have swim-up bars where we took full advantage of the bottomless Pina Coladas and virgin Strawberry Daiquiris!
During the day, there will be music playing and occasional organized events or entertainment hosted at the pool.
The pools close at 7 pm and unfortunately, there are no hot tubs to enjoy an evening soak.
Other amenities include a rooftop tennis court, a spacious gym with views of the ocean, and a spa that offers a variety of treatments for an additional charge.
There is also a kids club with a fun activity center and splash pool for younger kids. For the older kids, they will enjoy the teen room with pool tables, game consoles, and other activities.
I will say that compared to other resorts, we felt that Catalonia Costa Mujeres lacked in activities and entertainment for kids.
There were also no evening shows or performances (besides live music in the courtyard) while we were there, which was a little disappointing. There is a disco nightclub, though if that is your thing!
Catalonia Costa Mujeres Beach
The beach at Catalonia Costa Mujeres is the stuff tropical dreams are made of, with powdery white sand, jewel-toned water, and swaying coconut palms.
There was quite a bit of seaweed that washed up all along the shore while we were there, but they brought tractors around to clear it up each morning.
You’ll find plenty of beach chairs available, the only downside is that there aren’t any umbrellas. If you’re lucky you can find a chair under a palm tree.
There is also covered seating at the outdoor bar just steps from the beach where you can lounge with your favorite drink while listening to the crashing waves.
The beach does get crowded during the day.
If you want to avoid the crowds, visit the beach at sunrise where you can enjoy the lavender skies and glorious solitude. You may even see a few sea turtles.
Kayaks and Hobie Cats (small 4 person catamarans) are available at the beach for guests to use.
Parasailing is also available for $90 per person.
The guide will take you to the boat on a jet ski where each pair of guests will take 15 minute turns in the air. Plan for about 1- 1 1/2 hours total, depending on how many guests are on the boat.
If you are interested in other excursions, Isla Mujeres is located a few miles off the shore of Cancun and makes for a fun day trip.
There are a few tour options available at the hotel if you check at the concierge desk.
We found that there are other tour operators that are cheaper and will include pick up from the hotel. Just check to see if Costa Mujeres is within their pick-up zone before booking.
Here are a few of the best excursions on Isla Mujeres:
- Catamaran tour with lunch
- All-inclusive snorkel trip
- Sailing and snorkel tour with lunch
- Snorkeling with whale sharks

How much does it cost to stay at Catalonia Costa Mujeres?
Staying at an all-inclusive resort is like going on a cruise, but you aren’t stuck on a ship getting seasick!
While the price may seem a little high, keep in mind that it includes unlimited food, drinks, and entertainment.
The cost of our stay was $125 per person per night for a family of five.
There are quite a few factors that can cause the price to fluctuate, including the time of year you visit, how many nights you book, the ages of your kids, and how many people are staying in a room.

Tips for staying at Catalonia Costa Mujeres
- It is about a 50-minute drive from the airport and I would recommend booking a shuttle instead of renting a car. We made a reservation with Holiday Taxis and it was only $45 each way for our family of 5.
- Invite another family to join you! This is the perfect vacation to plan with other families. The kids will enjoy having the freedom to roam on their own together while the adults enjoy some relaxation.
- Consider splitting your time between two resorts so that you don’t get tired of the food and amenities. We booked 3 nights at Catalonia and 4 nights at the neighboring Planet Hollywood Cancun, which was such a fun resort. The resorts are right next to each other so you don’t even need a taxi!
- Don’t make the mistake of only packing swimwear, be sure to bring a change of clothes to wear to dinner each night.
- Bring a decent amount of small bills so that you can tip the waiters and other staff members.
- While staying at an all-inclusive resort is truly a relaxing vacation, we found that by day 7 we were beginning to feel glutenous and lazy! I would recommend staying 5-6 days.
